WINTER CLEARANCE SALE - UP TO 25% OFF FOR A LIMITED TIME

These boys need your help. Every dollar counts!

September 15, 2016

Here at Degree33 Surfboards, we don’t take the 100 Wave Challenge lightly. We don’t take the Boys to Men Mentoring Network lightly. When September rolls around, Degree33 Surfboards is fired up! We’re absolutely FROTHING to create a better future for San Diego’s at-risk youths.

WHAT IS THE 100 WAVE CHALLENGE?

It’s the primary fund raiser held annually to help get America’s kids off the streets, out of gangs and into living life as positive role models… as standout citizens in their communities.

HOW BAD IS IT?

85% of Incarcerated youths come from fatherless homes.

71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes.

63% of youth suicides come from fatherless homes.

90% of homeless youths come from fatherless homes.

85% of children with behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes.

Fatherless boys are 4 times more likely to need help for emotional or behavioral problems.

WHY THIS TREND?

Children, especially boys, who are raised without a father in the home, are often left to fend for themselves, typically raising their siblings while their mother works multiple jobs to feed them. Young boys like these have ZERO male role models to show them what a responsible man looks and acts like. With no guidance and the burden of financial, psychological, emotional and physical hardship, boys turn to crime to make ends meet, and the protection and power of local gangs as a means of survival.

HOW DOES THIS EVENT HELP?

The 100 Wave Challenge fuels the budget for the Boys to Men Mentoring Network. Boys to Men makes themselves available to these boys as an on-campus, after-school program. The boys are referred by family, friends, teachers, principals, counselors, law enforcement and juvenile hall. Boys to Men is a Network of MEN that have BEEN THERE BEFORE and somehow made it out alive to tell their story and what it took to survive or better yet, RISE ABOVE, the pitfalls of growing up without positive male role models. Boys to Men empowers, cares for, and guides boys into decision making ripe for building standout citizens in society. The 100 Wave Challenge raises more than 75% of the entire years’ budget for this program. The 100 Wave Challenge is responsible for tripling the size of the Boys to Men Mentorship Network over the past 3 years.

WHY IS DEGREE33 INVOLVED?

Straight up? Honest answer? Because we’re fathers, husbands, sons, and we GIVE A HUGE FRICKIN’ DAMN about the future of the next generation. These are the kids that will be the next male role models, the next fathers. Over the past 4 years, we’ve surfed with them, we’ve worked with them, we’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with them, and we’ve watched them grow. So you bet your ass we give a damn.

What we’ve found is this. Once you’re in on this thing, you’re in for life. We work alongside the phenomenal folks at Boys to Men Networking all year to gear up for this event, to take boards to the boys, to teach boys how to surf, how to build boards, how to work hard and taste the fruits of their labor. We show them with our actions, that the root of good living is compassion. We do this because it is our duty to show this generation of boys how to become fair leaders, caring mentors and someday, loving fathers to the generation that they raise.
